At this inaugural event on November 4—Volume 1: Little Gems—a ChamberQUEER-curated chamber ensemble of performers will perform an evening of works by Luna Lab alumni, including world premieres by Lili Namazi, Sage Shurman, and Devon Lee; alongside works by Caleb Palka, Jane Meenaghan, Alicia Erlandson, and Lucy Chen.

Soprano Rachel Schutz and pianist Andrea Christie join forces for a return performance on the concert series Le Petit Salon de Musique in East Setauket, Long Island. The two will perform a recital focused on the many ways that people’s voices and artistic expressions can be inhibited, excluded, muted, and restricted.

The first half of the program features songs by two female Welsh composers – Morfydd Owen and Grace Williams – almost completely unknown outside of Wales. Despite the high quality of their work, their songs have not made it into the main-stream canon of British music, in part due to still-existing cultural prejudices within the UK. The second half of the program explores other methods of suppression: racism, incarceration, and conflict. Until recently and certainly during their lifetimes, African American composers such as Margaret Bonds did not receive the recognition or performance opportunities that they deserved within the US music industry due to longstanding racism and exclusion. Ethnicity, paired with religion, is also the reason that Abduquadir Jalalidin, a well-known Uyghur poet, is being held in captivity in China. This poem escaped its confinement through oral transmission from prisoner to prisoner, eventually being translated into English by Joshua Freeman and set to music by Thomas Osborne. But countless other works of art and their artists remain trapped. And though he lived for many years after completing his Op. 38 songs, Sergei Rachmaninoff, who was forced to flee his native Russia during the Revolution of 1917, never wrote another song. What had been a prolific career in composition was silenced by his displacement and emigration. If these artists’ voices had been allowed to fully flourish and their works fully welcomed into our canon, our artistic landscape may be even richer.

Parhelion and Transient Canvas ensembles join forces in a rare double-bill event to present an evening-length concert of new music written for their respective ensembles.

About Transient Canvas:

For over a decade Boston-based contemporary duo Transient Canvas has been thrilling audiences with their “engaging musicality and easy sense of ensemble" (Cleveland Classical) and “superb” performances (Boston Globe). Bass clarinetist Amy Advocat (she/her) and marimbist Matt Sharrock (they/them) relish the creative potential of working with living composers, with the San Francisco Chronicle lauding “the versatile imagination they both display and inspire in others” and a commissioned repertoire of over 90 works. Since 2017, they have hosted their annual paid Composer Fellowship Program that is free and open to composers of all ages. They maintain an active touring schedule with recent performances at the Alba Music Festival, Festival of New American Music, Music on the Edge, New Music Miami, and Red Note New Music Festival, among others. Recent educational residencies include the University of Southern California, University of Miami, New York University, and Longy’s Divergent Studio. This performance will mark the first public showing of arias and scenes from Lisa’s new opera-in-progress with librettist Claire Solomon, La Ballonniste, inspired by the life of Mme Elisabeth Thible –– the first woman to ascend in a hot air balloon in 1784 in Lyon, France. Soprano Ariadne Greif introduces us to Mme Thible, while Lisa and baritone Peter Stewart fill out the rest of the cast. Peter sings the role of King Gustave III of Sweden, the balloon’s commissioner and namesake. Andrea Christie of Parhelion Trio returns on piano, and Claire Solomon and dramaturg Cori Ellison will be on hand to give context and lead some discussion.

The Parhelion Trio presents, not how we left this, a program confronting the societal pressures of recent years and acknowledging the collective journeys and transformations we subsequently experienced through music. With the global rise of political extremism and the devastating consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the composers featured in this program address each challenge in their own way or pay homage to composers whose inspiration has been a guiding light. Works include those by Tyshawn Sorey, Lisa Bielawa, Daniel Felsenfeld, Sunny Knable, and a world premiere of Tonia Ko’s evermore everyday. The trio gives its signature send-off with the ecstatic Music in Similar Motion by Philip Glass.

Parhelion is honored to join award-winning composer Sunny Knable in an all-Knable program at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall on the evening of Tuesday May 31st, 2022 in celebration of his second composition album.

This concert will include a world premiere written for Parhelion Trio, titled ‘Tenacity’ (2022) as well as performances by Trio Cabrini, bassoonist Scott Pool, pianist Natsuki Fukasawa, violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn, and pianist Barbara Podgurski.

Composer-vocalist Lisa Bielawa, hornist Mike Atkinson, flutist Alex Sopp, and pianist Andrea Christie play works written by Bielawa spanning from 1998 to 2017. Featuring ‘Fictional Migrations’ for flute/piccolo, horn and piano.

Lisa Bielawa is a 2009 Rome Prize winner in Musical Composition. She takes inspiration for her work from literary sources and close artistic collaborations. The New York Times describes her music as, “ruminative, pointillistic and harmonically slightly tart.” She is the recipient of the 2017 Music Award from the American Academy of Arts & Letters.

Composer Seong Ae Kim will talk about her aesthetic and her composition, accompanied by live performances of her works by Parhelion trio and percussionist Josh Perry. The content based on Seong Ae Kim’s work will revolve around raising awareness about racial discrimination, immigrant issues, and to empower people in the community to speak against AAPI hate crime.

For the final concert of the season, Sun Dog Collabs is proud to present the fearless Los Angeles-based violin duo The Furies in a double bill with Parhelion Trio. Play Date is a show that explores notions of loss of innocence, coming of age, and entertains the multiple intersections of body and voice in relation to femininity.

The Furies is a contemporary violin duo whose mission is to bring intersectional feminism into the concert hall through immersive performance experiences, to learn more about the histories of womxn, and to encourage audience members to demand more diverse programming from their musical institutions. The Furies’ individual and collective eclectic musical identities, incorporated with elements of performance art, has led them to develop their uniquely interdisciplinary approach to performance and programming. Not ones to limit themselves to their primary instruments, the duo performs and arranges works incorporating anything from singing/speaking, percussion, and live-processing electronics. Since their inception in 2018, The Furies has performed at several festivals, most notably as featured artists alongside Eighth Blackbird at The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival.

On Saturday April 18th, Parhelion Trio and Unheard-of//Ensemble team up for an evening of new music and visual projections. Featuring works by Krists Auznieks, James Diaz, Lisa Bielawa, Daniel Felsenfeld and Daniel Weymouth. Program TBA.

UNHEARD-OF//ENSEMBLE:
Ford Fourqurean (clarinet), Matheus Souza (violin), Issei Herr (cello), and Daniel Anastasio (piano) form the core of Unheard-of//Ensemble, a contemporary chamber ensemble dedicated to connecting communities across the United States through the development and performance of new music. Unheard-of//Ensemble’s 2019-2020 Season features more than 15 concerts, including a residency at Cornell University, performances as part of Alia Musica Pittsburgh’s series, collaborating with ICEBERG Collective, and their second Texas tour visiting Tarleton State University, Texas Lutheran University, and San Antonio College. Their debut album Unheard-of//Dialogues was released last season to critical acclaim, being called “a fantastic debut by a group that has been doing more than their part to inject vitality into the new music scene for the last few years” (Jeremy Shatan, An Earful).

The Parhelion Trio and ~Nois saxophone quartet join forces to present a multimedia evening event showcasing original and new works written for each group by five bold emerging composers: Ricardo Gallo, Emma O’Halloran, Seong Ae Kim, Gemma Peacocke, and Annika Socolofsky. Each work explores dreamlike states of consciousness, highlighting different aspects of night, darkness and silence, including the interplay between light and its absence.

Featuring video art and projections by media artist Xuan for works Dwalm and Turadh, the concert will break with a fiery wind-powerhouse finale in a joint ensemble performance of a modern classic, Philip Glass’s Music In Similar Motion.

This event kicks off the inaugural concert presented by Sun Dog Collabs, a new concert series hosted by the Parhelion Trio based in the West Village at the historic Greenwich House Music School.

This final exciting installment of chamber recitals presented by NMFS faculty and artists features a WORLD PREMIERE by Eugene Drucker (NMFS Faculty; violinist, Emerson String Quartet).  Sponsored by New Music USA and commissioned on behalf of NMFS 2018 Festival, Drucker's premiere is a full-length string quartet inspired by the theatrical/poetic narratives of Shakespeare and Levertov.

Also featuring works by Derek Bermel, Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Eivind Buene, this concert is bursting with creative energy.
